What Sets My Free Online Pilates Lessons Apart!

These Free Online Pilates Lessons Are Totally Different And Here's Why!

A Radical Back to Basics!

There are a great many low cost and free online Pilates lessons. What I present here is very different from all of these and here’s why.

First you’ll notice when you search the web that you have 2 options for learning Pilates online. Pay a reasonable monthly fee, usually about $20, and get access to experienced and even well-known teachers. The other option is Youtube. There you'll find many free videos, some good, some not so good and everything in-between.

Both these options have one thing in common, they are part of an overall trend in the Pilates world since Joseph Pilates died in the ‘60’s. This trend is toward more and more complexity in our teaching which results in a more difficult learning experience, especially for beginners. And this means a more time-consuming and expensive investment which I believe is hindering Pilates' growth and popularity worldwide.

Science has many names for this natural trend toward more complex systems and organisms. It’s just the way things go. Part of this is the wonderful effort by so many Pilates instructors to breathe new life into their instruction and into the experience of their students with new imagery and information and integrating other methods such as yoga (Yogalates), boxing (Pilaoxing), Zumba (Zumbalates) and even tango (Tangolates). There are other reasons as well for this trend which I explore in another article. All of this is wonderful and natural.

I too am breathing new life into my instruction, but by going in an entirely different direction! Instead of looking for something new to say, I went backwards!

I stripped away all those terms and images which I found so difficult to understand as a beginner, such as c-curve, navel-to-spine and lateral breathing to name only a few. I sought a simpler and easier-to-understand way of teaching and learning Pilates.

It Took Years!

It took quite a while to remove all the extra ‘stuff’ we teachers fill our Pilates vocabulary with. Then I tested this sparse instruction on students to see if indeed it made things easier without compromising safety. These free lessons have recently been awarded "Best Free Pilates Lessons."

My teacher, the ‘Pilates Elder’ Mary Bowen encouraged my journey. In retrospect it was so amazing of her to do so seeing as I was discarding the very language she had taught me. But those who met Mary even just briefly know that she is extraordinary!

free online Pilates lessonsThe most amazing revelation was viewing rare film footage of Joseph Pilates teaching a beginner student. This is film that, thanks to Mary, is available for anyone to see. In it Joe demonstrates an exercise and then has the student mimic his form. He uses very few words. He corrects errors, but it is clear that he is not looking for perfection.

This was shocking to me on many levels. It still shocks me to this day and here’s why. His teaching style is simple but on purpose. By this I mean, there are moments of bad alignment and poor breathing but he ignores these. Maybe he’ll bring them up in later lessons. We don’t know. But this is the best way to teach a beginner. Those of us, like myself, who have pursued advanced degrees in education remember the lessons that seemed so obvious, but in reality takes practice: too much criticism for beginners makes it too hard to learn. Likewise, too many words makes Pilates for beginners overwhelming and not fun. In other words, when it comes to Pilates beginners, too many words is harmful for your health!

This old way of teaching Pilates is the ‘new life’ I bring to my teaching, a return to the original way; back to basics. This is the new and refreshing instruction I present to you. This is the quick, easy and inexpensive way to learn Pilates.

Why Is Pilates So Special

Pilates has become the most popular exercise method in the world and for very good reason, it strengthens the most important set of muscles we have – the ‘core’ - better than anything else. This is an undisputed fact. This is why elite athletes include Pilates in their conditioning program, and why physical therapists recommend it. Here's what some of my students say:

"After the first 15 minutes I felt like a totally new person. I have a history of back issues and I now do Bob's Pilates mat exercise program 3 days a week and I am pain free." – Trevor Smith, Springfield, MA.

“Bob's Pilates training has extended my playing career by reducing injuries and increasing my playing time...such impressive results…” – Michael J. Celeste Jr. Esq, Palm Beach, FL.

In my free online Pilates lessons there are no strange terms, no talk of physiology or kinesiology. No breathing techniques. Nothing complicated. Nothing extra. Just pure movement with enough precautions to keep it absolutely safe.

Many of my students have tried Pilates before and quit because it was too difficult to learn. These same students find my instruction different.

“I tried Pilates twice before and the instruction was too complicated and overwhelming. Bob’s instruction is easy to follow and makes Pilates simple to learn.” – Paula B. Florence, MA

“Bob’s teaching is fun and easy to understand. His routine makes so much sense compared to the Pilates class I tried years ago…” – Barbara W. Northampton, MA.

Have a look for yourself at waht I'm talking about when I say simple and easy-to-understand instruction. Here is one of my video lessons.
